It depends on what you want. If you’re looking for flooring, I got 520 sq ft of tile from Home Depot for $500. The only had a pallet of it left and had to get rid of it. It was REALLY nice stuff. I find that hardware is cheaper at Lowe’s. And I ONLY get Behr paint at Home Depot. There are a lot of local stores near me that have good prices on other things.

Highly recommend Home Depot and Lowe’s!

Try Lowes if you have one near you…
i had to replace and boiler and at i found it for about 125.00 less than home depot and the same goes for paint, hardware but you should always shop around….. Kmart and walmart sell paint too..

i would stick with one your going to get the best deal at home depot than sherman williams is exspensive.and any window store is going to be more exspensive than home depot also why do you think all the contractors go to home depot.

careful there little Missy remodeler….cheapest and best are hard to put together realistically….as an experienced carpenter…cheapest is not necessarily the best…think about your motive first…are you going to roll this house over ?? there are a lot of contractor discount places for windows and doors which are high quality brands for low dollar cost…maybe you have one near you…often times the places are competitive in price, but it depends on what style you like…also, it is possible to get discontinued items at a greatly reduced price….good quality for an economical price…worth shopping…good luck….

I would not count on them to be the cheapest or have the best selections. We have been slowly redoing lots of parts of our house, and have used Lowes, Home Depot, Centure Tile, Menards, and commercial plumbing places. In general, many places like tile and flooring stores, electircal/lighting places have comperable prices, sometimes better, and MUCH BETTER selection. Fortunately they are all fairly close, and although it has taken extra time, I’m glad I didn’t just stick to Home Depot. Currently Lowe’s and Menards are more my favorite, generally speaking.

We just did cost comparison between our neighbors who used contractors versus what we did on our own on our home with the wonderful help of LOWES…Professional desk info as needed…
Our neighbors upgrades for painting their house inside and out cost over $6000 using the contractors….
We have spent $ 400 on paint and supplies upgrading on our own….
Our neighbors took up all the linoleum flooring in their kitchen and bathroom floors and laid down tile with contractors… It cost them $7000..
We did the same thing to our home ourselves…It cost us
$900.00 for all supplies…
We are currently putting up a new acre wide fence…Our neighbors contractors drug their heels and it took 10 days and 5 people and cost them close to $12000 with their home loans they got….
My husband is doing ours.. The total cost is for us is $800.00 so far it’s taken 3 days and we’re almost done…
There is a huge difference in cost when you invest the time to find out about how to do it yourself..The best thing is the appraisal people and insurance company rep came around and looked at the upgrades and said so far we have upped the appraisal values on our home over $25000…
Not bad for enjoying working on your home….

We have done lots of home remodeling and generally prefer Lowes over Home Depot. I am not saying it is better, but they do have a larger selection of things, like vanities, lighting, fixtures or other things that HD simply did not carry. We also found the “help” to be very knowledgable, but that will depend on each store itself. But for some things, it might be worth checking out a few other places, like outlet places for tile. We found that both Lowes and HD has lots of broken tiles in thier boxes. If you need big ticket itmes like windows, it wouln’t be a bad idea to call around for pricing, if you plan to have those delivered and installed by the seller. But if you are doing all of the work yourself (like us), it is handy to shop at one store. For a big project like a deck, Lowes also will help you select all your materials and give you a printout. If you pay for a large bundel like this (look for thier finace specials), you can just pick up the stuff as you need it and they will take it off your list. This saved us from hauling stuff home that we did not end up needing and they credited our account. You might want to go to each large store in your area and see which one has the stuff you like and will need. As for paint, we like the Lowes Valspar much better than HD Behr. Yes, some stuff at Lowes may have been a few pennies higher, but not enough to make a difference and it was worth it to get what we wanted.

We have contractor supply places here that you can find amazing deals on cabinetry, windows, and lighting that people have not liked when they ordered for their own home, or contractors have pulled “like new” out of old homes. It was way too expensive for me to remodel my home with everything from Lowe’s or Home depot - I needed to shop around.
Look for other alternatives as well if you wish to keep your cost down.

Anytime you are going to remodel you should definitely shop around. Be aware of sales going on also. It will be worth your time in the long run if you save $$!
